LAMP: Patrick Millar

The first free issue of LAMP is being distributed across universities, coffee shops, retirement homes, bars, libraries, hospitals, and art galleries, from May 2009.

Composed in solitude, it was time for these writers to circulate and aerate their work. LAMP includes a new generation of poets who want to serve the subjective wonder of poetry; writers who regard poetry as that rare place in language where anything is possible. This issue celebrates the importance of diversity and the continual relevance for poetry within our lives.

Each writer has approached and selected their subject and style with a unique perspective. Poetry is perhaps the most challenging of all forms of artistic expression both to define and produce. Who can categorically say when a particular kind of text even becomes a poem? The poet Gwendolyn Brooks once said, 'Poetry is life distilled,' and therefore, it remains a truly subjective experience.

On this online version of LAMP, a taster for the issue as a whole, you will find examples of the energetic and ambitious writing being pursued by seven newly emerging poets.

Tom Craze has been loosely associated with some form of creative output for the past few years. He writes cut-up, collage and prose poetry and likes to think he's a little bit better at it now than when he first started. Tom also likes noisy music, stand-up comedy and leaving everything until the last minute and getting away with it.

Lauren Witts missed out on her most public literary achievement to date. When it was announced during assembly that she had won a £10 book voucher for what the teacher called 'an insightful and sensitive' review of the book The Horse Whisperer, she was smoking in the toilets.

Patrick Millar is the bestselling author of approximately nothing, to date, though he intends to change that. Patrick enjoys tastefully applied eyeliner, occasionally pretending he's 'ghetto', and correcting people who are right just to see if they'll back down. By the time you have finished reading this, he will have made off with several irretrievable moments of your life.

Aquila Dunford Wood buys shoes that don’t fit and has an unhealthy addiction to prunes. When she is not writing she can be found standing in people’s bedrooms when they are not there.

Peter Gillies is a painter-poet whose artworks have been shown in exhibitions both at home in the UK and in Europe. Peter started writing poetry so as to collage text onto his canvases. He would like his writing to reflect his love of old Italian cities, books, jazz and abstract expressionist painting. Gaining a three year residents permit for free waterbus travel in Venice, according to Peter, has been a ‘career high’.

Harriet Saunders asked people who knew her to describe her in one word: excitable, ambrosial, rippled, vigorous, funky-fresh and equatorial. (Some descriptions are from non-bribed sources.)
